Firstly, what is diastasis recti? Diastasis recti is a partial or complete separation your rectus abdominis, also know as your “six-pack” muscles, which meet at the midline of your stomach. 33 to 66% of pregnant women will have diastasis recti at the end of their pregnancy. Don't let this scare you! Our amazing bodies have the incredible ability to adapt during pregnancy and this is one of those many ways. This is because the uterus stretches the muscles in the abdomen to accommodate your growing baby, or babies! Patients often ask, "Can diastasis recti lead to any other lead to any other health issues?" Diastasis recti can often lead to lower back, pelvic and hip pain, pain during sex, urinary incontinence or a constipation issue. Is it ever too late to correct diastasis recti? No! You can close diastasis recti years after you have delivered your last baby with proper care. How long it takes to heal depends on the severity of your diastasis, or in other words, the distance between your separated abdominal muscles and how much damage there is to the stretched connective tissue. What can I do about diastasis recti? Once your connective tissue gets stretched out, it can be difficult to rebuild your core strength. Doing traditional exercises can even make your condition worse! Crunches tend to make those muscles tighter, pushing them further apart and the additional stretching can cause the connective tissue to get even thinner and weaker. Isometric workouts with the traverse abdominis, as well as, strength training and cardiovascular exercise have proven to eliminate diastasis recti. However, scheduling and making time to commit to a traditional exercise program is often difficult, especially for a new, super-busy mom! Completing a series of EMSCULPT treatments is one of the latest and best ways to rid yourself of diastasis recti non-invasively, without down time or surgery! As a new, busy Mom, time is of the essence, there is never enough of it! Maintaining proper social distancing, keeping you and your family safe and healthy are also of great concern these days...With EMSCULPT , your treatments take place in a private, sterile room. No need to worry about who is working out next to you and if they are healthy! Each, 30 minute EMSCULPT session is equivalent to doing 20,000 crunches on your own, which as we know, is not possible to do. How does it do it? The EMSCULPT technology uses high-intensity, focused electromagnetic energy (or HIFEM) that triggers supramaximal contractions. These type of contractions cannot be achieved with ordinary, voluntary muscle action. EMSCULPT is FDA-cleared for "the improvement of abdominal tone, development of a firmer abdomen and strengthening of the abdominal muscles". A single, 30-minute treatment induces 20,000 contractions in the abdomen. Your body responds to the strain of these supramaximal contractions, by producing new muscle tissue (hyperplasia) and enhancing your existing muscle fibers (hypertrophy.) Will I be sore after my EMSCULPT session? Great question! Some clients may feel mildly sore afterwards but we have many who do not thanks to the third phase of EMSCULPT, which is designed specifically to help flush lactic acid out of the body (Lactic acid is what causes you to feel sore after exercising). A half hour from the time you begin your EMSCULPT session, your workout is completed, and you are out the door and on the way to the rest of your busy day!
